Celebrating Noodle Rings

Dec 10, 2025 | Food Blog

Today’s Spotlight is on Noodle Rings.

A noodle ring is an edible bowl made of noodles. It’s made by mixing pasta, eggs, and cheese, and then baking it in a ring mold. Other ingredients can include flour, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup.

Noodles and pasta are different in several ways, including:

  • Ingredients – Noodles are usually made from rice or other grains, while pasta is made from wheat flour.
  • Salt – Noodles usually contain salt, which helps bind the dough. Pasta is usually salt-free.
  • Preparation – Noodles are made by passing dough through rollers and cutting the flat sheet. Pasta dough is usually pushed through molds.
  • Serving – Noodles were traditionally served in a hot or cold broth, while pasta was served with sauce.

Noodles are usually long and thin, and can be made from any starchy material, like rice or even beans. Pasta is generally used to describe traditional Italian noodles.

History

he oldest evidence of noodles dates back to 4,000 years ago in China.  The first noodles were made from millet, a type of cereal grain.  They were shaped into little bits, formed from bread dough, and thrown into a wok of boiling water. This kind of noodle is called mian pian and is still eaten in China.

The earliest written record of noodles is found in a book dated to the Eastern Han period (25–220 CE). Noodles made from wheat dough became a prominent food for the people of the Han dynasty. Some historians believe noodles originated in the Middle East and were originally made with semolina and dried before cooking. Others believe the birthplace was somewhere in Central Asia.

Noodles were introduced to Japan from China during the Song Dynasty between the Heian until the early Kamakura period. The first instant ramen noodle was created in Japan.

Noodle rings have been made for hundreds of years, dating back to the Middle Ages. They are centuries old and were first mentioned in a Pennsylvania Dutch cookbook in 1936.

Noodle rings were popular in the 1940s and 1950s, but then fell out of favor. They were used to holding main dishes like creamed chicken, meatballs, and vegetables. The Campbell Soup Company introduced ring-shaped canned pasta in 1965. The marketing manager, Donald Goerke, nicknamed “the Daddy-O of SpaghettiOs”, created the dish to be mess-free.

Here are some fun facts about noodle rings:
