Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day

Aug 17, 2025 | Food Blog

Today’s Spotlight is on the Cheeseburger.

A cheeseburger is a grilled sandwich made of a patty of ground meat, topped with a slice of cheese, and placed between two halves of a bun. The patty is often seasoned with chopped onions, spices, or breadcrumbs before cooking. The cheese is added near the end of the cooking time. The burger is then placed in a bun and topped with condiments like lettuce, tomato slices, onion slices, pickles, and ketchup. The bun should be slightly crunchy on the outside and soft inside. The cheese should be melting over the meat.

The best burgers have a combination of flavors and textures, including sweet, sour, salty, and crunchy. They should be juicy, but not so thick that they feel like meatloaf. The patty should be soft and moist, but not fall apart. The bun should be soft but sturdy. The ratio of meat to bun and toppings should be even from the first to last bite.

The best burgers are made with high-quality, fresh ground beef. Chuck steak is often used because it has the perfect ratio of fat to muscle. The fat content makes the meat moist. Other meats that can be used include lamb.

The grind, fill system, texture, and shape of the patty can all impact the visual appeal and mouth feel. The patty to bun ratio can also alter the customer’s perception of the burger.

To fully appreciate a burger, you need to use all five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. These senses help you evaluate food by considering its size, shape, color, temperature, and surface texture.

The best burgers offer a combination of tastes and textures, including sweet, sour, salt, and a bit of crunch. The patty should be juicy, the bun should be soft but sturdy, and the meat/bun/accompaniment ratio should be even from first to last bite.

Some sensory attributes of a burger include:

  • Brightness of color.
  • Animalic odor.
  • Springiness
  • Hardness
  • Chewiness
  • Juiciness
  • Oiliness
  • Saltiness
  • Sweetness
  • Meaty flavor.

History

The hamburger may have been invented by Louis Lassen in 1900 at his small restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut. Lassen is said to have created the first hamburger by placing a beef patty between two slices of bread and adding cheese and condiments. The Library of Congress agrees that Lassen invented the burger. Lassen’s burgers are still served at Louis Lunch, a small hamburger shack in New Haven.

Some food historians credit Lionel Sternberger as the first person to eat a cheeseburger. In 1924, the 16-year-old added a slice of American cheese to a hamburger at his father’s sandwich shop, The Rite Spot, in Pasadena, California. Sternberger placed a slice of American cheese on a hot hamburger patty. He liked the “cheese hamburger”, and so did his father and started offering it at the shop.

The term “cheeseburger” is a shortened version of “cheese hamburger”. A cheeseburger is a hamburger with cheese. The word “hamburger” comes from the German town of Hamburg and refers to a burger made from beef.

However, Louis Ballast of Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver trademarked the name “cheeseburger” in 1935.

Burger vs Sandwich

Burgers and sandwiches are different types of food. Burgers are made with a cooked meat patty and a bun or roll, while sandwiches are made with a filling between two slices of bread. Burgers are named after the city of Hamburg, where a minced beef dish was first created. The word “hamburger” first appeared on a menu in 1873 at Delmonico’s restaurant in New York City. The name was shortened to “burger”.

Sandwiches are named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. It is said that the Earl would order his valet to bring him salt beef between two pieces of toasted bread while playing cards.

Here are some fun facts about cheeseburgers:

  • The term “cheeseburger” was coined 10 years later by a restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky. Charles Kaelin invented the term “cheeseburger” in 1934 at his restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky.
  • The oldest burger chain in America is White Castle, which was created in 1921.
  • The name “hamburger” comes from Hamburg steaks that were introduced to the United States by German immigrants.
  • The largest cheeseburger ever made weighed 777 pounds.
  • The popular Jimmy Buffett song “Cheeseburger in Paradise” was inspired by a boat trip Buffett took.

Consumption

The cheeseburger is the most popular burger in the world. Americans invented and popularized the cheeseburger, which is now available worldwide through McDonald’s. According to a YouGov survey, 73% of Americans like meat-based burgers. The Big Mac is the best-selling burger in the world, with over 550 million sold each year in the US.

Americans eat about 50 billion burgers a year, which is enough to circle the Earth 32 times. That’s about 2.4 burgers per day, or three burgers per week. The average American eats about 154 burgers a year.

McDonald’s sells about 6.48 million burgers every day, or 2.36 billion burgers every year. That’s more than 75 burgers every second.
