National Donut Day

Jun 1, 2025 | Food Blog

National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of June every year, and it’s a day to honor one of the world’s most beloved treats. National Donut Day was first celebrated in 1938 as a way to honor the female volunteers of the Salvation Army who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday was created to recognize the efforts of these volunteers and to raise funds for the organization. The holiday is still celebrated today, and it is a day to celebrate the joy that donuts bring to everyone.

Donuts themselves, have been around since the Middle Ages and have been enjoyed in many different cultures around the world. The spelling of the word “doughnut” is often interchangeable with “donut.” The spelling of “doughnut” is a more traditional spelling, and it is derived from the combination of “dough” and “nut” and is used most commonly in the United States and Canada. The spelling of “donut” is a more modern variation of the word and is used more often in the United Kingdom.

The earliest known donuts were called “olykoeks” or “oily cakes” and were made from a sweetened dough that was deep-fried in animal fat or lard. These early donuts were served in Europe as a special treat during Lent, when eating rich foods was forbidden.

The donuts that we know today didn’t come about until the 19th century. The first known recipe for a sweetened doughnut was published in the book “The American Frugal Housewife” written by Mrs. Lincoln in 1803. This recipe called for the dough to be cut into shapes and then fried in fat.

The first donut machine was invented in 1920 by Adolph Levitt. Levitt was a Russian immigrant who had moved to New York City and opened a bakery. He was the founder and owner of the Manhattan-based bakery, Adolph Levitt’s Donut Corporation. The company was known for its high-quality donuts and became a popular destination for New Yorkers in the 1920s. He invented the machine to streamline the production of donuts and make them easier to produce. The machine allowed donuts to be produced much faster and with less effort than before. The company eventually closed its doors in the 1930s, but Levitt’s invention of the first donut machine revolutionized the donut industry.

Today, donuts are enjoyed around the world and are a beloved snack food. National Donut Day is a day to celebrate this delicious treat and all the wonderful varieties that it comes in. There are an estimated 300 varieties of donuts around the world. Some of the most popular varieties include glazed, jelly, chocolate, and maple. Donuts can also be filled with creams, custards, and jellies, and they can be topped with a variety of different toppings and decorations.

In the United States, donuts have become a very popular snack food, and it’s estimated that Americans consume over 10 billion donuts every year. The World Health Organization estimates that the global consumption of donuts is over 20 billion a year.
