National “I Love Reeses” Day

May 17, 2025 | Food Blog

Today is National “I Love Reeses” Day! This day celebrates the classic peanut butter and chocolate candy that has been around since the early 1900s. It’s no surprise that this beloved candy is so popular, since the combination of creamy peanut butter and smooth milk chocolate is so irresistible.

Reeses was created by H.B. Reese in 1928 after he left his job at the Hershey Chocolate Company. At the time, he was working out of his basement in Pennsylvania and selling candy out of his car. As the popularity of Reeses grew, the company was eventually sold to the Hershey Company, where it has remained ever since.

Currently, there are a variety of different Reeses products available, including the classic Peanut Butter Cup, Reeses Pieces, and Big Cups, as well as the limited-edition items such as the Reeses Sticks and the new Reeses Lovers Cups. There are also seasonal varieties, such as the Reeses Easter Eggs, which are available around the Easter holiday.

According to the Hershey Company, the most popular Reeses product is the Peanut Butter Cup, with over 500 million consumed in the U.S. and around the world each year. Each year, enough Reeses products overall are sold to make over 10 billion pieces. I feel like I am responsible for a considerable number of those personally.

Fun facts about Reeses include:

  • The first Reeses product was a chocolate peanut butter cup, which was sold for a penny each.
  • • The most popular Reeses product is the Peanut Butter Cup.
  • Reeses is the most popular candy associated with Halloween.
  • The Reeses logo was designed in 1963 by Jim Gillett.
