National Eggs Benedict Day

Apr 15, 2025 | Food Blog

National Eggs Benedict Day is celebrated on April 16th each year, and it’s a day to celebrate one of the most delicious breakfast dishes around. Eggs Benedict is a dish that consists of a poached egg and Canadian bacon served on an English muffin, topped with hollandaise sauce. It’s a rich and decadent dish that’s perfect for a special breakfast or brunch occasion. On National Eggs Benedict Day, you can enjoy this classic breakfast dish with friends and family and celebrate the perfect combination of flavors.

The origin of Eggs Benedict is widely disputed, with different stories claiming to be the first to produce the dish. One story claims that the dish was created in the 1860s by a stockbroker named Lemuel Benedict who was looking for a hangover cure. He is said to have ordered toast, poached eggs, bacon, and hollandaise sauce at the Waldorf Hotel in New York City, which the chef then combined into the dish. Another story credits the invention of the dish to Commodore E.C. Benedict, who ate it at Delmonico’s Restaurant in New York in the 1880s.

The first printed recipe for Eggs Benedict is said to be in the 1894 cookbook, “The Epicurean” by Charles Ranhofer, although there are some variations in the ingredients included. Ranhofer’s recipe is for “Eggs a la Benedick” and is made with an English muffin, ham, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and anchovies. To make the dish, an English muffin is split in half and lightly toasted. The muffin is then topped with a slice of ham, two poached eggs and a generous amount of hollandaise sauce. The dish is then finished off with a sprinkling of anchovies.

In recent years, Eggs Benedict has become a popular breakfast dish and has been adapted in many ways. The traditional dish is usually served with bacon or ham, but variations of the dish now include a variety of ingredients such as smoked salmon, avocado, and spinach.

Here are some fun facts about Eggs Benedict:

  • There are many variations of Eggs Benedict, including variations that use smoked salmon or spinach instead of Canadian bacon.
  • Hollandaise sauce is a key component of Eggs Benedict, and it’s a sauce that’s made by combining egg yolks, lemon juice, and butter.
  • Eggs Benedict is a popular brunch dish, but it can also be enjoyed for lunch or dinner.
  • There are many health benefits to eating eggs, including that they are high in protein, vitamins, and minerals.
  • The perfect poached egg for Eggs Benedict has a runny yolk and a fully cooked white.

Not much has changed in this recipe for the past one hundred and sixty years. Here is the classic recipe:

The Stinking Rose

The Stinking Rose

Of all of the cultivated plants nothing seems to have such an interesting background as garlic. “The Stinking Rose,” also known as garlic, is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world and has been around approximately 5,000 years. Garlic is given this nickname due to its belonging to the Lily, or Allium, family and its pungent smell. The term “stinking rose” reportedly goes back to Greek and Roman times. In 1918, French writer and physician Henri Leclerc roughly translated garlic's ancient Greek name, scorodon, to skaion rodon, and then to rose puante, or stinking rose.
