History
There are multiple theories about the origin of the name “sundae”:
- Charles Sonntag: A pharmacist named Charles Sonntag created the dessert and named it “sonntag” after himself. “Sonntag” means “Sunday” in German.
- Glassware salesman: A glassware salesman ordered “sundae dishes” to serve the dessert in.
- Local Methodist leaders: Local Methodist leaders objected to naming the dessert after the Sabbath, so the spelling was changed to “sundae”.
- Customer: A customer suggested changing the name from “Sunday” to “sundae”.
The name “ice cream sundae” was given to the dessert to avoid offending religious leaders because the treat was originally only sold on Sundays. The misspelling of “Sunday” was done to assure religious leaders that the dessert was not named after the Sabbath.
Another story says that in 1892, a minister asked for vanilla ice cream and was given vanilla ice cream topped with a candied cherry and cherry syrup. The minister was so impressed that he said it should be named for the day it was created, and so it became the “Cherry Sunday”.
Here are some fun facts about sundaes:
- The first sundae was created on Sunday, April 3, 1892.
- The world’s largest sundae weighed almost 55,000 pounds. It was made with 20.27 tons of ice cream, 4.39 tons of syrup, and 537 pounds of toppings.
- The sundae was invented in Two Rivers, Wisconsin in 1881.
- The sundae was invented by John M. Scott, a Unitarian Church minister, and Chester Platt, co-owner of Platt & Colt Pharmacy.
