National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day

Jun 30, 2025 | Food Blog

National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day is celebrated on July 1st each year. It’s a day to try out different ice cream flavors, especially ones you might not usually prefer. July is also National Ice Cream Month, which seems fitting due to the higher that average temperatures.

Going back to the history of ice cream, the first ice cream flavor was camphor. An ice cream-like food was first eaten in China in 618-97AD. King Tang of Shang had a dish of buffalo milk, flour, and camphor.

The first documented ice cream recipe was by Englishwoman Lady Anne Fanshawe in 1665. The recipe suggests flavoring the “icy cream” with orange blossom water, mace (a part of nutmeg), or ambergris.

The first-recorded flavor seems to be Alexander the Great’s ice concoction mixed with honey and nectar.

With such an interesting history it’s hard to imagine some of the odd flavors of ice cream that are out there. But today’s mission is to explore lesser-known flavors and try new things. There are over 1,000 flavors of ice cream. Here are some of the least popular ice cream flavors in the United States:

  • Neapolitan ice cream
  • Fish ice cream
  • Oyster ice cream
  • Ox-tongue ice cream
  • Chicken-fried steak ice cream
  • Salad-flavored ice cream
  • Parmesan ice cream

Vanilla is considered by many to be the greatest ice cream flavor ever invented. Vanilla is the most popular ice cream flavor and is often paired with other desserts. Other great ice cream flavors include:

  • Chocolate
  • Cookies ‘n’ Cream
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
  • Mint Chocolate Chip
  • Strawberry
  • Coffee

Vanilla was one of the first flavors to be widely produced in the modern era. It’s still the top-selling flavor in the world.

But if you want some examples of unusual and rare ice cream flavors here is a list:

  • Horse flesh
  • Pickled mango
  • Corn on the cob
  • Foie gras
  • Pear and blue cheese
  • Cheese
  • Cicada
  • Tiger tail
  • Cold sweat
  • Phantom white truffle

Other rare ice cream flavors include:

  • Honey jalapeno pickle
  • Lobster
  • Smoked salmon
  • Curry
  • Fish and chips
  • Oyster
  • Pizza

Just in case any of these rings a bell for you, here are some places that offer rare ice cream flavors:

  • Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium: In Bar Harbor, Maine, they have lobster ice cream
  • Salt & Straw Ice Cream: This popular chain has locations on the West Coast and a rotating menu of strange flavors
  • Sweet Spot: The Ice Cream Store: In Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, they have booger ice cream
  • Sparky’s Homemade Ice Cream: In Columbia, Missouri, they have cicada ice cream
  • Mason’s Creamery: This creamery has a spicy sriracha ice cream that’s available year-round
  • Milk & Cream Cereal Bar: This shop has locations in New York and New Jersey, and they have a flavor called Froot berry bliss

So, as always, we encourage you to explore and try new things. After all its National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day, try and see what is out here. You never know. Let us know in the comments what is the craziest flavor you have ever tried.
