National Chocolate Chip Day

May 14, 2025 | Food Blog

National Chocolate Chip Day is celebrated every year on May 15th to honor the beloved treat. Chocolate chips are one of the most popular baking ingredients and are used to make a variety of delicious desserts. Whether you’re baking a batch of cookies or making a decadent chocolate cake, chocolate chips are sure to add a delicious sweetness and crunch to any recipe.

Chocolate has been around since the ancient Aztecs, who believed it had magical and medicinal properties. The Aztecs would drink a bitter, spicy chocolate drink made from the beans of the cacao tree. By the 16th century, chocolate had made its way to Europe where it was enjoyed as a hot beverage. By the 1800s, chocolate makers were experimenting with ways to make solid chocolate.

Chocolate has also been used as a form of currency. The ancient Aztecs used cocoa beans as a form of currency, and chocolate coins were also used in Europe in the 1800s. Today, chocolate coins are still used as a form of currency and are a popular choice for birthday and holiday gifts. With its rich flavor and creamy texture, that’s what they mean by putting your money where your mouth is!

Chocolate chips as we know them today were invented in the 1930s by Ruth Wakefield, who created the famous chocolate chip cookie. Today, chocolate is enjoyed in a variety of forms, from chocolate bars to hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies.

Today, Americans eat an average of 12 pounds of chocolate per person per year. That’s about 2.8 billion pounds of chocolate consumed in the United States each year! Globally, the amount of chocolate consumed is even higher, with an estimated 8 million tons of chocolate consumed worldwide each year.

There are many different types of chocolate available, from dark chocolate to white chocolate. Dark chocolate is made from cocoa solids and cocoa butter and is often more bitter than other types of chocolate. Milk chocolate has a creamy, sweet flavor and is made with cocoa solids, cocoa butter, and milk. White chocolate does not contain cocoa solids, but is made from cocoa butter, sugar, and milk. Each type of chocolate has its own unique flavor and texture.

Chocolate chips are made from chocolate that has been chopped into tiny pieces. Chocolate chips are usually made from dark chocolate, although there are many different types available, such as white chocolate chips and semi-sweet chips. Chocolate chips are also a great addition to ice cream, milkshakes, and other desserts. Fun facts about chocolate and chocolate chips include: Chocolate is the number one flavor for ice cream in the United States, and Americans eat about 2.8 billion pounds of chocolate each year. Milk chocolate chips are the most popular type of chocolate chips, followed by semisweet chips. Chocolate chips are often added to oatmeal cookies and chocolate chip muffins and can also be used to make chocolate chip pancakes. Finally, one of the most popular uses for chocolate chips is to make chocolate chip cookies.
