Pound cake has a long and storied history. The cake is said to have originated in England in the late 17th century, when butter and eggs were weighed out in pounds. The recipe was then brought to America by English migrant bakers, and it quickly became popular in the United States. By the late 19th century, pound cake was a staple of American cuisine. The earliest known pound cake recipe was published in the 1796 edition of Amelia Simmons' American Cookery, one of the first American cookbooks. The recipe called for a pound of butter, a pound of sugar, a pound of flour, and 12 eggs. This recipe is still used as the basis for many pound cake recipes today.
