National Cupcake Lovers Day

Jun 12, 2025 | Food Blog

National Cupcake Lovers Day began as an online celebration in 2009. It was created by the founders of Cupcake Lovers, a website dedicated to cupcake recipes, reviews, and more. Since then, it has grown into an international day of celebration, with people around the world celebrating the joy of cupcakes on the same day each year.

Were cupcakes originally made in cups?

Yes, cupcakes were originally made in individual molds, rather than muffin tins. The name “cupcake” comes from the fact that the batter was poured or dropped into cups or molds. The cakes were then baked in the oven, and after cooling, they were removed from the molds.

Number cakes, also known as cupcakes, originated in the late 18th century in England. They were originally made in individual molds, with each one being assigned a number. The cakes were then baked in the oven, and after cooling, they were removed from the molds.

The first recipe for cupcakes was published in 1796 in a cookbook called American Cookery by Amelia Simmons.

The recipe for cupcakes from 1796 is as follows:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Sift together the flour and baking powder.
  3. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time.
  5. Add the dry ingredients in three parts, alternating with the milk.
  6. Add the vanilla extract.
  7. Pour the batter into greased muffin tins, filling each about two-thirds full.
  8. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the tins for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

In the early 19th century, bakers began to use muffin tins to bake cupcakes. Cupcakes were popular during the Victorian era, and they continued to gain popularity in the 20th century. Today, cupcake shops can be found all over the world, and cupcakes are still a popular treat.
