National Poultry Day is celebrated every year on the second Friday in June. This day is an opportunity to celebrate poultry, an important part of our diets, and to recognize the hardworking farmers and producers that bring us our poultry.
Poultry is a popular and healthy choice for meals and snacks. It is a leaner source of protein than red meat, and it can be cooked in a variety of ways. Whether you’re grilling, baking, or frying, there are plenty of delicious recipes to choose from. On National Poultry Day, get creative in the kitchen and try out a new poultry dish. You can also show your appreciation for poultry producers by purchasing local and humanely-raised products. Let’s give thanks to the farmers who work hard to bring us healthy and tasty poultry.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, over 80 million metric tons of poultry are consumed globally each year. According to the National Chicken Council, Americans eat an average of 84 pounds of chicken per person per year. That’s about 230 million chickens a day!
Poultry is not just chicken. There are many species of domesticated poultry, including turkeys, ducks, geese, quail, and guinea fowl. All of these birds can be raised for eggs, meat, or feathers. Each type of poultry has its own unique flavor and texture, making it great for all kinds of dishes!
You can also show your appreciation for poultry producers by purchasing local and humanely-raised products. Let’s give thanks to the farmers who work hard to bring us healthy and tasty poultry.

Did you know that chickens were first domesticated in India over 5,000 years ago? They quickly spread to China and the Mediterranean region, and eventually made their way to Europe. Now, over 50 billion chickens are raised worldwide every year!

Lemon Garlic Roasted Chicken

Ingredients:

1 (3-4 lb) whole chicken
1 lemon, halved
4 cloves garlic
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 425°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with foil.

2. Rinse the chicken with cold water and pat dry with paper towels.

3. Place the chicken on the prepared baking sheet. Stuff the cavity of the chicken with the lemon halves and garlic cloves.

4. Rub the outside of the chicken with the olive oil and sprinkle with oregano, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper.

5. Roast the chicken for 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.

6. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes before carving and serving. Enjoy!
