National Bavarian Crepes Day

Mar 21, 2026 | Food Blog

It’s National Bavarian Crepes Day! Bavarian crepes, also known as Kaiserschmarren, are a traditional Austrian dessert dish made of shredded pancakes, usually served with a sweet topping like applesauce, plum jam, or fruit compote. This scrumptious treat is a favorite across the world, with variations of the recipe like German and Swiss versions. Bavarian crepes, also known as German pancakes, were first created in the early 1800s in Bavaria, a region in southern Germany. The earliest known recipe for Bavarian Crepes was published in the cookbook “The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy” by Hannah Glasse in 1747.
The original recipe called for a thin batter made from eggs, flour, and milk, and it was cooked in a skillet. The crepes were often served with a variety of toppings, such as jam, sugar, and fruit. They were a popular breakfast food in Bavaria and were enjoyed by locals and travelers alike. In the late 1800s, the popularity of Bavarian crepes spread across Germany and into other parts of Europe. During this time, ingredients such as sugar, butter, and cream were added to the batter to make the crepes richer and more flavorful. In the early 1900s, the recipe was further enhanced by the addition of baking powder, which made the crepes lighter and fluffier. Today, Bavarian crepes are still popular in Germany and many other countries. They are often served as a sweet breakfast dish, topped with jam, sugar, and fruit, or as a savory dinner dish, filled with meat and vegetables. They can also be served with a variety of sauces and creams. Bavarian crepes continue to be a popular dish in Germany.
These tasty crepes are made with a simple batter of flour, eggs, milk, and sugar. The crepes are cooked in a pan until lightly browned and then shredded with two forks. The shredded pieces are mixed together with a sweet topping of your choice and served warm. Bavarian crepes are the perfect sweet treat for any occasion, from breakfast to dessert, and National Bavarian Crepes Day is a great time to get creative with your favorite recipe.
